Krawczyk leads Penn Cycle series by a point

The cat 1/2 men contested their second Penn Cycle Points race last Thursday. Early on, Jeff Anderson (Speedfix), Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelman), Matt Montesano (Speedfix) and Colton Barrett (Optum) pushed the pace. By the second sprint, several fast, hard attacks were waged and riders were shooting off the back of the field. After some mid-race regrouping, Andy Kruse (Speedix), who kept a low profile in the first half, wound up and created distance between him and the field to win the fifth sprint. He made another savvy and well-timed attack in the final sprint to earn fourth place overall.

Barrett earned points in all eight sprints to secure the win. Montesano made his presence known in all but one sprint. He and Krawczyk, who won the mid-race prime, tied for second.

Krawczyk (Revolution Cycles) held his place on the series leaderboard, but Montesano moved into second and remains only one point behind him in the standings. Barrett made his debut in third, with Casper and Kruse just one point behind him and tied for fourth. With two races left in the series - August 9 and September 13 - it's still anyone's guess who will come out on top.

Freewheel Bike Corporate Challenge On Tap This Thursday

After 3 weeks of serious training, five teams will contest the 1st Freewheel Bike Corporate Challenge on Thursday.  Racers from each team will compete in an Italian Pursuit format.  In this race, teams will cover 6 laps, with each racer taking a turn at the front of their team, before leaving their group to finish the race.  It is an all-out drag race with each racer putting out the most power they can to pull the team around the track. Here's a video of Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins contesting the Italian Pursuit in 2009.

The 2012 Freewheel Bike Corporate Challenge teams this year represent these prominent Twin Cities companies:

  • Boston Scientific
  • Frederikson & Byron
  • GE Capital
  • Medtronic
  • RBC

Come out to cheer on these titans of industry as they show their track racing skills this Thursday.
